In the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, artists who did not use oils, used the Egg Tempera, with their artworks very well preserved.
Luminous colours and many made with only one pigment.
Tempera formulated by Gustave Sennelier in 1895 is an emulsion of natural products, based on the recipes of the masters of the 16th century and consists of egg yolk, pure non-yellowing vegetable oil, Gum Arabic, natural balms for the binder and selected pigments (mainly mineral pigments).
The artist Marc Chagall used Egg Tempera and Mark Rothko bought a lot of Egg Tempera at the Sennelier shop in Paris.
These colours are ground in the "old-fashioned" way with stone millstones in accordance with tradition. This ancient recipe gives the tones an exceptional freshness and a great luminosity.
After drying for a few months, the work can be varnished either with a watercolour varnish to preserve it in its initial state or with an oil paint varnish to give the Tempera the appearance of oil.
