Instructions for Use

Materials Needed:

  • Oil paints

  • Brushes

  • Palette

  • Michael Harding MM1 Oil Paint Medium

  • Canvas or painting surface

  • Palette knife (optional)

Step-by-Step Guide:

1. Prepare Your Palette:

  • Begin by squeezing out your chosen oil paints onto your palette, ensuring they are ready for mixing.

2. Add the Medium:

  • Pour a small amount of Michael Harding MM1 Oil Paint Medium beside your oil paints on the palette. You won’t need much, as this medium is concentrated. A little goes a long way.

3. Mix the Medium with Paint:

  • Using a palette knife or brush, mix a small amount of MM1 Oil Paint Medium with your oil paint. Start with about 5–10% medium (approximately 1:20 to 1:10 medium to paint) and adjust as needed. Avoid using more than 10%. The medium increases the fluidity of the paint and enhances its transparency, making it ideal for glazing and creating luminous, thin layers.

4. Apply the Paint:

  • Use your brush to apply the medium-enhanced paint to the canvas. You’ll notice a smoother application, perfect for achieving even, detailed strokes. The medium helps in creating thin, translucent layers without losing colour intensity, making it great for glazing techniques and delicate brushwork.

5. Build Layers:

  • For glazing or layering techniques, MM1 is excellent for building up transparent layers of colour. Allow each layer to dry before adding the next, ensuring clarity and avoiding any muddiness.

    6. Clean Up:

    • After your painting session, clean your brushes and palette thoroughly. Wipe off any excess paint and medium, then clean your tools using a suitable solvent like Miracle Medium or turpentine, followed by soap and water to maintain the condition of your brushes.

    Tips for Best Results:

    • Experiment with Ratios: Start with small amounts of MM1 and gradually adjust the ratio depending on how fluid or transparent you want the paint to be. More medium will result in a thinner, more fluid consistency, perfect for glazing. Do not add more than 5/10%.

    • Layering and Glazing: MM1 is excellent for creating luminous glazes. Work in thin layers, allowing each to dry fully before adding the next, to build rich colour depth.

    • Smooth Finish: This medium offers a glossy, smooth finish, perfect for fine detail work or large areas that require a uniform sheen.

    • Storage: Keep the medium tightly sealed when not in use, and store in a cool, dry place to maintain its quality.

Using Michael Harding’s MM1 Oil Paint Medium will give you more control over the drying time, flow, and transparency of your oil paints, making it an essential tool for artists looking to work efficiently with glazing and fine detailing techniques.
