INK - Tom Norton - WALNUT INK - 60ml

  • £14.50

Tom Norton Walnut Drawing Ink®, lightfast and acid free, made using artist grade pigments (not walnuts!).

Inspired by artists such as Rembrandt, DaVinci and Van Gogh, who used walnut ink in their drawings, which unfortunately as the inks were made with highly acidic real walnuts, it caused their incredible drawings to fade and the paper to deteriorate over the centuries.

Experience the rich walnut colour and superior rendering capabilities loved by the world’s most famous artists, safe in the knowledge that you are using an archival ink.

Ideal for use with the Tom Norton Walnut Drawing Stick.

Unlike many brown inks, Tom Norton's is water-based and so acts more like watercolour, as it always remains water-soluble.

Artists in all media love to draw with it for its beautiful sepia tonal qualities.

Watercolourists love its layering and lifting properties, layer to darken tones or add water to lighten them, also use a wet brush to lift colour.

Calligraphers can use it with both dip and fountain pens and because it remains water-soluble even when dried, it easily washes out of nibs.

Encaustic artists use Walnut Drawing Ink for under painting on wood substrates because it is water soluble and soaks into the surface without sealing the wood, allowing wax paints to be absorbed into the wood and provide a good archival bond. Encaustic printmakers use it for the same reason, allowing unique drawings to be created on their printing papers before making encaustic prints.

Pastel Artists can it  for underpainting on sanded paper, not affecting the paper’s texture.
