Pinata Alcohol Inks - Details and Usage Instructions

Posted by Jeff Rowley on

Jaquard Alcohol Inks unique formulation allows Artists to work freely on almost any clean, oil-free surface, including: ceramic, glass, metal, plastic, vinyl, acetate, stone, leather, paper, card, sea shells, air drying clay and more.

They are acid-free, transparent, highly concentrated, dye-based inks, they differ from other brands because they are Ethanol, rather than Isopropyl, based allowing for a more intense colour, as the dye and binder are more soluble in ethanol than alcohol.

Being dye-based they are light resistant, but not light proof, over time, the colours can fade so it is important to keep away from direct sunlight. A final varnish with a good UVA protection or displaying behind glass can offer additional protection against fading.

The exception to this are all the metallic colours and White (Blanco Blanco) which are opaque and lightfast. The stunningly reflective metallic colours made from real metal pigments while Pearl is a metallic white made with super reflective mica pigments, terrific for mixing with the dye-based colours to create entirely new palettes of pearlescent inks.

The white also is great for mixing tints and pastels.

Indelible and moisture-resistant when dry,  beautiful, highly colour saturated, acid-free, transparent inks with an alcohol base in 14.79 ml (½ fl.oz) applicator bottles plus white and metallics we also offer in larger 118ml (4 fl.oz) bottles.

Also in the range Claro Extender makes the inks more transparent, reducing  intensity without changing the colour it can also be used to slow drying, extending working time while maintaining shine. It can also be dropped or brushed onto dried ink to create effects.

Clean up Solution is used for thinning Piñata Alcohol Inks, surface preparation and clean up for the inks and a variety of other art & craft projects.

Alcohol inks are also complimented by Yupo synthetic paper.

Highly versatile, Piñata can be used in a variety of applications, including rubber stamping, fine art, fabric art, scrap booking, calligraphy, faux finishing techniques, graphic and airbrush applications, wood and leather staining plus many more.

Techniques:

  • Mixing Piñata with Claro — it will stay shiny and not change colour. It extends the drying and working time.

  • Claro is also a transparentizer. Claro dropped or brushed on top of dry Piñata will make it spread, creating rings of marble or stone-like texture. Slight dulling occurs, but most will remain shiny. Just like real stone!

  • Mixing Piñata with alcohol produces a slightly lighter colour. When sponging this mixture, expect to see tiny bubble-like textures. This is very effective in making background papers and other interesting textural faux effects.

  • Alcohol dropped or brushed on top of dry Piñata removes the shine. This is particularly effective on terra cotta surfaces or in faux finishing techniques where shine would detract from the overall effect.

  • Spritz or brush layers of colour over colour. When wet, each layer will push aside the under layers creating amazing effects. Allowing each layer to dry will produce beautiful glazes and truly spectacular colours with clarity and depth.

  • Add blanco Blanco to any of the Piñata Colors and achieva a completely new glowing range of pastel variations with a touch of opacity

Resists:

  • Crayons: draw with various colours and apply Piñata.

  • Wax: following directions from the manufacturer, apply melted wax to fabric. Crinkle the fabric allowing the wax to crack, then apply Piñata. Iron the wax away to create beautiful batik effects.

  • Gum Arabic: mix gum Arabic with water to a heavy cream consistency. Apply this to a rubber stamp or paint it directly onto a surface. Apply Piñata. Gently wash away the gum Arabic.

  • Piñata Clean-Up Solution: Piñata Clean-Up Solution contains moisturizers to keep brushes soft and pliable. (TIP: Use regular rubbing alcohol to clean off most of the Piñata from brushes and sponges. Use the Clean-Up Solution for the final rinse to keep brushes soft and ready-to-use the next time!)
